Three Men in a Basement

Can three people, in a disused research unit, kick-start a new technology company in two weeks with only £2,000? That’s the challenge we took on in conjunction withd The Media Centre, to spearhead a two-pronged initiative to fuel digital entrepreneurship and tackle the skills shortage. The brainchild of Elder’s joint founding director Chris Gillespie, the task will see him and two students from The University of Huddersfield attempt to turn a complex tech concept into…

Ada is 200

Ada Lovelace was born 200 years ago today. Many people think of Ada as the “First Computer Programmer”.  The traditional story goes that it was Ada who spotted the potential of the work being done by Charles Babbage building his early computers, and it was Ada who developed the first programs for them.  This version is familiar, hopefully, to most who care anything about the history of computing and programming. I have been teaching computing…

Award Winner

We are winners! The Huddersfield Examiner Business Awards celebrate all that is best about business in the local area. At  an awards evening in November, Elder Studios were judged winners in the category of SME of the Year (sponsored by Walker Singleton).  We’re all rather pleased. The judges learned that we have come a long way since being founded by Chris and Alex in 2012.  From the small beginnings of just the two of them working…

University Partnership

Elder Studios has entered into a partnership with the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.  The partnership will see developers from Elder Studios presenting the School’s final year module in Advanced Web Programming. Many of the students taking the module will be looking forward to careers in web development, and this arrangement will allow them to learn skills currently being used in the industry, from experienced developers who use them on…

Roaming Roosters set £10m turnover target

Simon and Nick Mellin, founders of the grass-fed meat company, Roaming Roosters have been in the spotlight recently as they are on target to reach a £10m turnover later this year. The pair have an honest and ethical approach to food retail, their use of native British breeds sourced from local farmers enables full traceability at a time when consumers are demanding it. After opening their Bistro and farm shop in 2012 sales rocketed from £50,000 to…

That was the week. That was.

So we have survived our first Code Club.  Luke has written about it elsewhere, but we’d like to share here the rather awesome video that the Media Centre made during the week.  Without further ado: We finished the event with a bunch of happy and excited young coders (the excitement fuelled no doubt by the Media Centre’s kind donation of copious amounts of Cheesey Puffs. We also gained a healthy respect for teachers who do…

Code Club Report

After a very exciting week with the Code Club members – Ben, Hayleigh, Luke, Leo, Ibrahim, Fatima, Alex, Jack, Leon, Oliver, Evie and Maisy, we finally have time to breathe and reflect on the event and how it went. I think it’s fair to say that both the children and the members of staff/volunteers benefited greatly from the experience and I feel that it is something that will stick with us all for a very…

Creative Media Showcase

A long while ago I wrote about the joys of teaching some people PHP.  In brief, I had taken on the mission of helping some of the creative web design students at Leeds Beckett University with learning some PHP.  There were two ideas here; to give them enough PHP so they could add some basic interactivity to the sites they had designed, and to give them some insights so that they wouldn’t design sites that…
